FAQs

A postgraduate or master’s degree is a higher qualification after an undergraduate or bachelor’s degree. Students pursuing their postgraduate studies are looking to specialise at an advanced level.

Postgraduate degrees vary from MA/MSc programmes to MBAs and PhDs. Depending on your short-term goals, preferred location to work and area of specialisation, each advanced level qualification can be beneficial in different ways.

Postgraduate studies are an excellent way to refine your interests, enhance your skill set, and cultivate a comprehensive understanding of your preferred field. But more importantly, a postgraduate makes you more employable. According to the University of East Anglia, UK, approximately 15 percent of jobs (1 in 7) will need a postgraduate degree.

When deciding where to pursue your postgraduate education, it’s important to consider your personal and professional goals. While many study in popular destinations such as the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and parts of Europe, you should find a location that offers specialisations that align with your individual needs and cultural preferences. Simply put, you should look for a place that can provide you with the education you need to achieve your goals and where you feel comfortable and supported.

If you’re wondering whether you can use your postgraduate degree to get a work permit, it’s important to understand that the rules and opportunities vary depending on the country. In the UK and Canada, for instance, you can extend your student visa by two years, while in the US, the extension is only for one year (known as OPT), which applies to all degrees that are not in the STEM field. The availability and requirements of these permits also depend on whether you have a job offer in the respective country.

Postgraduate programmes cover many education options after your bachelor’s degree. A master’s in one of many postgraduate programmes that allows you to earn degrees such as MPhil, MSc and MA, among others. Other postgraduate programmes include doctorates, diplomas, and professional degrees like LLM, MD, CPA, FRM, and more.

Absolutely! When pursuing a master’s degree, you can choose to enrol either as a full-time or part-time student, which will determine the duration of your degree programme. If you opt for full-time study and take a full course load, you can expect to finish your degree programme faster. On the other hand, as a part-time student, you can work to balance the financial burden of tuition. However, completing your degree will take longer. Ultimately, the decision to enrol as a full-time or part-time should align with your circumstances and goals. It’s important to weigh the pros and cons of each option and consider how it will impact your life and career aspirations.

Background

AN aimed for an MS in Marketing in the US and the UK. The applicant was prompt in balancing the WES evaluation and other application components. They only had a two-month marketing internship in a finance company. However, as an undergraduate, the applicant was editor-in-chief of the college magazine, co-authored academic papers and hosted an Instagram series on mental health, diversity, and the LGBTQ+ community.

Background

Hailing from a Tier 2 Indian City, KJ aspired to study at a leading US university. Compounded by her sister’s academic achievements on the international stage, KJ faced heightened pressure. She lacked motivation and dealt with self-doubt, further complicating her path to success.

Approach

The Red Pen’s supportive approach was crucial in helping KJ maintain focus. Tailoring our search to match KJ’s situation, we identified universities that valued diverse academic backgrounds and did not require the GRE. VV

GRE/GMAT:
N/A

GPA:
3.19/4.0

Qualification:
BSc in Management and Finance, concentration in Strategic Management

Work Experience:
2 Years

Admitted to:
NYU

Background

After completing his US undergraduate management degree, V V returned to India to manage his family business. But his true passion for soccer left him restless within the corporate environment. Seeking a career change, he approached us for assistance in finding a targeted program to fulfil his sports aspirations. But despite being passionate about soccer, which he played as a hobby during his pre-university days, his resume lacked the sporting qualifications required for a master’s in sports management.

Approach

We advised him to conduct a sporting activity to show his ability to combine the strength of his management degree with sports. V V conducted a 12-week sports workshop and training camp for the underprivileged children of his factory workers and applied learned principles like time management, talent building, analytical training, and precision building into the workshop modules. He used this experience in the narrative to show his ability to apply taught concepts and combine them with his passion and soccer knowledge. Doing so contributed significantly to being accepted into the master’s programme for sports management at NYU.

Key Takeaway

V V’s journey exemplified how passion can guide program selection and focused endeavours to meet eligibility criteria for a master’s degree. But the biggest takeaway from this case was that if an applicant spends sufficient time developing their profile, it can significantly contribute to their resume, enabling them to qualify for programs aligning with their goals.

Approach

Considering his profile, we took a collaborative approach, persuading IB to acknowledge his potential and suggesting top-tier institutions offering courses suited to his career goals. We then encouraged IB to share his articles on political matters, international diplomacy, and war conflicts on his LinkedIn platform. Parsons School of Design

CANDIDATE:
SO

GRE/GMAT:
N/A

GPA:
8.5/10

Qualification:
Bachelor of Fashion Technology + Master of Fashion Technology from NIFT, Delhi

Work Experience:
Fresh graduate

Admitted to:
The New School (Parsons) and Goldsmiths

Background

SO sought The Red Pen’s support late in his application journey, aiming for top fashion schools worldwide despite having average grades and lacking standardised test scores. However, amidst the application frenzy, he realised he hadn’t crafted a comprehensive long-term professional strategy. While his application highlighted undergraduate internships and a recent university fellowship in his first master’s programme, it wasn’t aligned with his goals for a second master’s degree. Despite our advice on the strength of his aptitude development story and weaknesses in his skill utilisation plan, the pressure of exams and deadlines weighed heavily on SO. Though he crafted an outstanding application that impressed a prestigious college at the University of London, the college requested a supplemental essay to elaborate on the goals outlined in the initial Personal Statement.

Approach

SO’s submitted essay failed to convince the admissions officers about how he would apply the skills gained from the course, catching him off guard. Recognising the wisdom in our counsel, SO turned to his lead counsellor for continued guidance even after their formal collaboration had ended. We anticipated this scenario and offered assistance, initiating a counselling session to help SO research a career plan for his future. We emphasised that the university’s request was not a setback but rather an opportunity for SO to reaffirm his commitment to pursuing a second master’s degree. Advising him to align his past experiences with future aspirations, we guided him in articulating a strategic rationale behind his desire for further education.

Key Takeaway

The university’s acceptance validated our expertise in the postgraduate application process. Our proactive approach to organising a family counselling session strengthened our voice, and we collectively convinced Shreyash about the importance of highlighting significant information upfront. It reinforced our understanding of what universities seek and comprehensive interpretations of essay prompts. This experience underscored the importance of dedicating sufficient time to crafting persuasive applications and carefully interpreting essay prompts to deliver customised responses that align with university expectations.

GRE/GMAT:
GRE 322

GPA:
3.7/4.0

Qualification:
AS in Computer Science, Magna Cum Laude in the US

Work Experience:
2 years

Admitted to:
Warwick, Fordham

Background

Despite having a strong academic foundation, AS lacked confidence in AI and machine learning (ML). Professionally engaged in HR technology at an American MNC payment card services company, AS was equally drawn to autonomous vehicles, sparked by experience with an automotive AI-driven system. A key challenge was articulating these seemingly contrasting interests into a cohesive narrative. Joining the application process late added pressure to define goals clearly within tight timelines. Additionally, AS expressed concern that essay reviewers were not subject-matter experts and might not fully capture the technical nuances of the profile.

Approach

We adopted a tailored counselling approach, beginning with clarifying long-term goals and working backwards to align AS’s skills, experiences, and aspirations. AS structured essays to demonstrate the natural intersection of AI in HR and autonomous systems, bridging predictive analytics with reinforcement learning. Both interests were unified under the broader theme of leveraging AI for optimised decision-making. We reversed the structure to present the journey as a well-researched, logical trajectory, demonstrating technical-understanding and clear direction.

Key Takeaway

AS’s case illustrates that interdisciplinary ambitions can form a strong narrative when grounded in clarity and purpose. With expert guidance, even complex stories can become compelling applications that strike a balance between technical depth and strategic presentation.

We discovered that the applicant was a semi-finalist at a national-level women’s competition. We advised her to use this experience to show that she could manage the rigour of a computing course and participate in a competitive programme. She wrote her Statement of Purpose from a perspective of building her confidence and transitioning into someone who encouraged women to foray into STEM. Simultaneously, she highlighted her soft skills and ability to think outside the box to solve problems.

Key Takeaway

Despite two years of work experience, the candidate’s narrative focused on the competition and its transformative effect. She showcased strong public speaking skills, which gave her the confidence to communicate confidently at work. The CMU acceptance validated the potency of unique non-academic stories in a Statement of Purpose. Background

PK wanted to pursue another master’s after completing an online MBA, which he primarily undertook to meet WES equivalency requirements for a US master’s degree. He approached us to apply for a specialised degree in Integrated Innovation, which combines technology, management, and design thinking. His profile raised questions about the rationale for a second degree. It required careful recalibration of his application narrative to convincingly demonstrate academic and professional progression.

Approach

We helped PK reframe the non-traditional path as a deliberate step towards innovation and leadership. We targeted mid-career and niche programmes, presenting the second degree as a natural evolution from generalist business knowledge to specialised expertise in tech. PK highlighted his hands-on leadership in tech projects, supported by recommendation letters that emphasised adaptability and vision. A pre-essay skill-mapping exercise and clearly defined goals enabled PK to structure an essay and additional sections around a journey from exploration to focused specialisation.

Later, BU secured the Princeton Asia Fellowship and joined a fintech firm in Mongolia managing healthcare systems. Despite possessing exceptional technical skills, BU faced challenges in crafting a compelling SOP, struggling to select the most impactful stories, determine what to highlight, and structure experiences effectively for top-tier admissions committees.

Approach

To refine BU’s SOP, we used a pre-essay brainstorming tool to map experiences and skills to defined career goals. Case studies helped align BU’s aspirations with industry expectations and identify key competencies to showcase. We advised shifting focus from future ambitions to tangible achievements, spotlighting community-building efforts at MIT while letting the résumé and recommendations convey technical strengths. BU’s goals were reframed around leadership in ethical AI, ensuring a coherent and forward-looking narrative.

CANDIDATE:
RN

GRE/GMAT:
310 (Verbal-151/Quants-159/AW-3.5)

GPA:
8.12/10.0

Qualification:
BBA

Work Experience:
Fresh graduate

Admitted to:
UT Dallas for MS Finance

Background

RN joined us while pursuing a PGDM to fulfil the 16-year prerequisite of US universities for a master’s in finance. Applicants require a WES evaluation, which takes at least seven working days, followed by Indian universities taking 10-20 days for transcripts. After factoring in other application requirements, we advised RN to apply for the WES evaluation early. Unfortunately, a three-month delay in initiating the WES process led to a significant setback, which could cause the applicant to miss the early deadlines.

Approach

Assessing the situation, we recalibrated the college list to include more universities that accepted a 15-year undergraduate degree for which the applicant already had the WES evaluations. We applied to these universities with a revised strategy.

Key Takeaway

The case of RN perfectly exemplifies the difference an experienced counsellor can make to a postgraduate application. While proactive planning and timely execution are essential, strategies to navigate unforeseen obstacles are equally crucial to the application process.

Background

Showcasing early leadership and creative thinking qualities, AM taught at a non-profit and eventually funded the education of five underprivileged students at the age of 14. In college, AM led the Astronomy Club and won national marketing competitions, showcasing initiative and collaboration. These qualities carried into her role at a leading advertising agency, where she worked cross-functionally and led diverse teams. However, AM’s average GPA demanded a story that went beyond numbers to reflect true potential.

Approach

It was AM’s authenticity and self-awareness that made the application stand out. The SOP drew from professional projects rooted in inclusive growth and progressive leadership. Rather than listing achievements, AM reflected on motivation and development through each experience. A personal mission to lead with empathy and drive impact through storytelling and strategy emerged. Through multiple brainstorms, the theme of growing with the community evolved into a coherent and memorable arc.

Key Takeaway

AM’s journey shows how early community engagement and values-led leadership, paired with strategic reflection, can shape a compelling, purpose-driven narrative. By owning academic gaps and uniting diverse experiences, AM transformed potential drawbacks into strengths recognised by top-tier programmes.

CANDIDATE:
KK

GRE/GMAT:
Not Attempted

GPA:
9.5/10.0

Qualification:
BVOC in Travel and Tourism Management

Work Experience:
1-month internship at Hana Travels | 3-month internship at The Drama Queen Company

Admitted to:
UAL, Goldsmiths (University of London), University of Manchester

Background

When KK approached us, she wanted a goal to pursue a career in Luxury Brand Management. Ranking second on their college’s 2024 Scholars List, KK had a strong academic foundation with coursework in Strategic Management, Digital Marketing, Entrepreneurship, and Niche Tourism, reflecting a sharp insight into consumer behaviour and emerging markets. However, despite a deep interest in luxury branding, there was limited awareness of the wider opportunities within the fashion industry. Moreover, KK hadn’t considered strategic fashion programmes as a possible pathway, despite it being a strong fit given her skills and inclinations.

Approach

Our first step was to help KK explore untapped possibilities, not only for luxury brand programmes but also for fashion management courses, offering equally strong, and often more versatile, career paths. Together, we built a unified core theme rooted in branding and storytelling, then crafted two distinct yet authentic SOPs. One highlighted luxury marketing strategies, the other focused on the creative and commercial dimensions of fashion. We also guided KK in developing a visual portfolio of brand insights, curated marketing observations, and independent projects, along with a polished video essay that reflected her confidence, clarity, and future goals.

Key Takeaway

KK’s final applications reflected academic range, growth, and increased industry awareness. After securing offers from both luxury and fashion programmes, we supported a strategic decision-making process that weighed long-term goals, programme scope, and industry alignment. Though initially set on Luxury Brand Management, KK chose the Strategic Fashion Management programme at the University of the Arts London, recognising the value of building a strong foundation in fashion business strategy before unifying her competencies under the broader umbrella. This journey reflects The Red Pen’s core strength of helping candidates expand their vision, explore untapped paths, and present a more complete, future-ready version of themselves.
