UChicago Launches SSEN: Everything You Need to Know to Fast-Track Your Undergraduate Application

Why has UChicago introduced SSEN?

Yield rate, in admissions terminology, refers to the percentage of admitted students who accept the university’s offer and enrol. Consider a scenario where a college extends admission to 2,000 applicants. If 1,00 students accept the offer, the college’s admissions yield would be 50 percent. Universities often use admissions yield as a yardstick to measure their popularity and strength, and they tend to offer admission to students who are more likely to accept their offer. Therefore, by introducing the SSEN programme, UChicago aims to offer admission opportunities to students who have already showcased an interest in enrolling by participating in its summer programmes. 

What are the timelines for UChicago’s SSEN? 

Students eligible for UChicago’s SSEN must submit their application between September 1 and October 15, notably earlier than the ED1 deadline in November by approximately 15 days to a month. Decisions for the SSEN are announced within three weeks of submitting your application. This early decision timeline offers applicants the advantage of receiving prompt feedback on their application status, so that they can plan their next steps without enduring the extended waiting periods often associated with regular admissions cycles. 

How to apply for UChicago’s SSEN programme? 

1) Create a UChicago account: 

Visit the UChicago admissions website to begin your application process and create a personal account. Within this account setup, you should specify “SSEN” as your chosen application plan. This decision is crucial as it indicates your commitment to UChicago as your top choice and willingness to enrol if admitted, aligning your application strategy with UChicago’s admissions criteria.

2) Complete the application form: 

Whether using the Common App or the Coalition application platform, filling out every section thoroughly and meticulously is essential. 3) Submit the Student Early Decision Agreement:

It is essential to use this agreement in your UChicago account. Do not use the ED agreement in the Common App or Apply Coalition portals if you plan to apply SSEN. 

4) Follow standard application instructions:

5) Counsellor and teacher recommendations: 

Due to the early timeline and prior interactions with students, UChicago can review applications without a school counsellor letter if one hasn’t been written. Teacher recommendations submitted as part of your pre-college summer application will automatically be included in your first-year application. The teacher recommendation requirement will be waived if you participated in a pre-college programme before your final year of high school. If you participated earlier in high school, only one teacher recommendation will be necessary.

• Immersion Programmes: Whether creative writing, STEM previews, or exploring economic policy, philosophy, and free expression, UChicago’s summer immersion programmes enable students to explore their passions with several undergraduate-level courses led by faculty. A residential offering, typically lasting two weeks, students can choose from 33 courses like Biotechnology for the 21st Century, Cinema, Media and Society: A Global Survey, Contagion: Infectious Agents & Diseases, Creative Writing, Pathways to Data Science and lots more.

• Summer Online: Students can also choose UChicago’s Summer Online, which has intense five-week courses featuring real-time interaction, dynamic class discussions, and collaborative group projects. Subjects include Data Science in Quantitative Finance and Risk Management, Talking to Others: The Psychology of Communication, Global Political Economy: Power, Inequality and Globalisation, The Modern State: Justifications and Critiques and more.
