Education for sustainability is becoming increasingly important as industries respond to climate change, resource scarcity, and the transition to a greener economy. According to LinkedIn’s Global Green Skills data, the demand for green talent is growing nearly twice as fast as the supply of qualified professionals. As a result, skills gaps are emerging across sectors such as technology, finance, and engineering. Universities are therefore rethinking how they prepare students for the future. The University of Waterloo reflects this shift in higher education. It also shares its perspective on education for sustainability and preparing students to address complex global challenges. 

The role of interdisciplinary learning in education for sustainability 

Sustainability challenges require expertise across multiple disciplines. Environmental science alone cannot address issues such as climate change, resource scarcity, and pollution. These challenges require collaboration across engineering, economics, policy, and human behaviour. 

As a result, education for sustainability increasingly focuses on helping students develop the systems-thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills needed to create effective and lasting solutions.

How the University of Waterloo fosters interdisciplinary sustainability learning 

The University of Waterloo’s approach to education for sustainability is built on interdisciplinary collaboration. It brings together knowledge from different faculties and programmes to address complex environmental challenges. Programmes such as Environmental Sciences combine biology, earth sciences, chemistry and hydrology with field-based learning. Students gain scientific and practical skills to address climate change, water security and ecosystem management.

This collaborative model extends beyond the classroom through the Water Institute. It brings together more than 170 faculty members from all six faculties at the University of Waterloo. Researchers collaborate with government, industry, and community partners to develop solutions for watershed management, urban water systems, climate resilience, and sustainable water governance. 

Additionally, the Climate Institute further strengthens this interdisciplinary approach by connecting researchers across faculties to advance climate mitigation, adaptation, and policy. Together, these institutes integrate teaching with research, preparing students to develop evidence-based solutions to global environmental challenges.  

Innovation and entrepreneurship for environmental impact

A key goal of education for sustainability is helping students turn ideas into action. While research generates new knowledge and technologies, entrepreneurs bring these ideas into the real world. They develop products, services, and business models that create impact at scale. From clean energy and sustainable materials to resource conservation and waste reduction, many environmental solutions must move beyond the laboratory to create real-world impact. 

As a result, universities are increasingly integrating innovation, entrepreneurship, and sustainability-focused learning to help students translate ideas into practical solutions for environmental and societal challenges. 

How the University of Waterloo supports sustainability innovation and entrepreneurship

One programme that exemplifies education for sustainability at the University of Waterloo is the fourth-year interdisciplinary Capstone project. Faculty members create interdisciplinary teams by grouping students from the Environment and Business programme with peers from Mathematics and Engineering. Together, they develop a sustainability idea to solve a real-world problem for an existing business or create an entrepreneurial idea for a new business. 

For example, the City of Sault Ste. Marie in Ontario, Canada, asked students to assess the viability of converting surplus wind energy into hydrogen for export to European markets.  Engineering students focused on the practical challenge of electrolysis while Environment and Business students investigated the business case. When delivery to the European market proved too expensive, the team pivoted and proposed injecting hydrogen into the natural gas pipes for domestic use. 

An entrepreneurial student team sought to improve access to fresh produce for food banks across Canada. During their eight-month Capstone, they created a hydroponic venture called HydroBud to grow leafy greens at a low cost. Then they pitched their venture at GreenHouse’s Social Impact Showcase and won $3,000 CAD in startup money. 

Experiential learning in education for sustainability 

Education for sustainability extends beyond the classroom. While lectures and coursework provide foundational knowledge, students also benefit from opportunities to apply sustainability principles in real-world settings. Experiential learning helps students understand how environmental, social, and economic priorities interact in practice. Students gain this experience through industry placements, field projects, and applied research. By working on real challenges, students develop the problem-solving, adaptability, and professional skills needed to contribute to sustainability initiatives across sectors. 

How the University of Waterloo brings sustainability learning into real-world settings

At the University of Waterloo, education for sustainability extends beyond the classroom through the world’s leading co-op programme. Larger than the next two Canadian co-op programmes combined, it gives students access to an unmatched network of employers, career support, and paid work opportunities. By alternating between study and work, students typically complete four to six co-op work terms, similar to internships. These experiences allow them to apply their knowledge to real sustainability challenges while exploring different career paths. As a result, they are prepared to make an impact from day one. The university’s co-op students gain practical skills through roles in clean technology, conservation, sustainable infrastructure, and climate research. At the same time, they contribute to environmental solutions. 

Beyond co-op experiences, students also put sustainability into practice on campus through the University’s Sustainable Living Lab. They use the campus as a living laboratory to test green infrastructure and other initiatives. Their findings benefit the University and the broader community.

Education for sustainability in action

  • Matthew (Geography and Environmental Management): Matthew surveyed tornado damage in Quebec with the Canadian Severe Storms Lab. He saw how extreme weather reshapes landscapes and affects people’s lives. The experience inspired him to pursue natural disaster research focused on helping communities better prepare for severe weather.  
  • Kirsty (Climate and Environmental Change): A field course in Ghana transformed Kirsty’s understanding of water security by revealing its deep connections to gender inequality and community life. The experience shifted her career goals toward exploring the intersection of environmental issues and gender to develop more equitable solutions. 
  • Liz (Environment, Resources and Sustainability): Snorkelling through South Africa’s kelp forests alongside marine biologists ignited Liz’s passion for ocean conservation. The experience led her to pursue marine-focused coursework and plan for graduate studies in marine ecology.  
  • Mariam (Environment and Business): A visit to the Region of Waterloo landfill introduced Mariam to waste management and circular economy principles. That hands-on experience led directly to a co-op role in waste collection and diversion, where she applied classroom concepts while educating residents about sustainable waste practices.  
  • Alexis (Climate and Environmental Change): During a co-op in the Canadian Rockies, Alexis contributed to climate research and developed her undergraduate thesis project. The experience gave her the confidence to see herself as a researcher and confirmed that a career combining science and the outdoors was possible. 
  • Francesca (Environment and Business): A field course in Atlantic Canada connected Francesca with researchers, industry leaders and local communities. She explored links between ocean ecosystems, tourism and sustainability. The experience inspired her to pursue sustainable tourism and embrace an interdisciplinary career path shaped by lifelong learning.  

Preparing students to create impact at a global scale 

Sustainability challenges are inherently global. Issues such as climate change, resource scarcity, and biodiversity loss affect communities, economies, and ecosystems across borders. As a result, education for sustainability must help students understand how local actions connect to broader environmental and societal outcomes. Universities foster this perspective by exposing students to international partnerships, sustainability initiatives, and diverse approaches to problem-solving. 

Through these experiences, students develop a deeper understanding of sustainable development. They also learn how to adapt solutions to different social, economic, and environmental contexts. 

In doing so, sustainability education prepares future leaders to address complex global challenges and create meaningful impact at scale. 

How the University of Waterloo connects education for sustainability with global impact 

The University of Waterloo has established itself as a leader in global climate collaboration. It achieves this by connecting research, education for sustainability, and policy through international partnerships.  As the founding host institution of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Canada, it played a central role in mobilising Canadian universities, researchers, and policymakers. Together, they advanced the United Nations 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  

Through SDSN Canada, the university helped build a national network that fostered research collaboration, strengthened sustainability education, and connected Canadian expertise to global policy discussions. This ensured that student and faculty research contributed to international sustainable development priorities. 

In addition, the university’s commitment to global engagement extends directly to international climate diplomacy. Each year, the university sends student delegations to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP). There, students observe and participate in negotiations alongside government representatives, researchers, and civil society organisations. These experiences provide students with firsthand insight into the development of international climate policy while enabling them to engage with the global networks shaping climate action. 

Together, these initiatives demonstrate how the University of Waterloo bridges academic research with international decision-making. It equips the next generation of leaders to address complex sustainability challenges on an international stage. This is achieved by fostering cross-border partnerships, supporting evidence-based policy, and preparing students to participate in global environmental governance. 

Perhaps the future of sustainability will depend less on discovering new solutions and more on preparing people who can connect existing knowledge in new ways. Environmental, economic and social challenges are increasingly intertwined. Therefore, interdisciplinary thinking, collaboration and action may be as important as technical expertise.
